REASON FOR LOSS:

On the night of May 29, 1944, associations of the IXth Air Corps attacked the small port town of Torquay on the channel in Lyme Bay with 65 aircraft. 18 of the attacking machines from KG 2 contaminate the sea area in front of Torquay with mines, while the rest of them drop explosive bombs on the port.

The Ju 188’s of I./KG 6, which started in Bretigny at 23:47, also fly this attack. These planes carry 1 x SC 1000, 1 x SC 500 and 6 x SC 50 as bomb loads.
The approach route is via the island of Guernsey in the canal to the mark in grid square 4147.
From here, the fighter planes fly straight to the target. There is a lot of activity in the target area and the machines have aerial combat as expected, because light anti-aircraft guns fire on the attackers.

The Ju 188 drop their bombs onto Torquay. They get hits in the town and in the port.
On the return flight to the Melsbroek take-off site, the Ju 188 A-2 (3E + BK; Werk-Nr. 160 084), flown by Hptm. Erwin Lissat, 2./KG 6, is probably shot down by british anti-aircraft or night fighter. The Ju 188 probably crashed into the channel and the whole crew is missing. The remaining machines of I./KG 6 land at their departure point around 03:15.
