REASON FOR LOSS:
Aircraft took-off from Moreton - in - the- Marsh at 1743 hrs and set course for the Nantes region of France on a Nickel operation. While flying at 11,000 feet over the English Channel, an engine caught fire and the pilot was forced to return. Having turned back and reaching landfall Sgt. Jones decided to carry out a premeditated descent through cloud. While doing so he tragically flew into the ground between Liss and Longmoor, four miles West-North-West from Liphook, Hampshire. Of those who died, Sgt Jones R.N.Z.A.F. is buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, while the rest of those killed were taken to their home towns.
