Burton Joy, England, WAAF, No. 1 Balloon Centre, Aircraftwoman 1st Class

 Joy Burton was in the WAAF and was killed in action on June 23rd 1944 aged 21 years. She was part of a barrage emplacement in Kidbrooke in SE London when they were his by a V1 rocket. Joy lived in Wokingham, Berkshire with her parents , Tom and Claire and her younger sister, Poppy. I am looking for anyone who had knowledge of her and the family and particularly her fiancé, Norman Fryer who was also in the RAF.

Joy’s Nephew (Jeff Dean) is looking for anyone who had knowledge of her and the family and particularly her fiancé, Norman Fryer. Please contact us with any information you may have to pass onto Jeff.

Robert John, England, Fleet Air Arm, Pilot, Rear Admiral,

John joined the Navy in 1938. John served throughout the war in various theatres. This included the Arctic Convoys twice, the Mediterranean, as well as supporting ground forces on D-Day. In 1945, he trained to fly and joined the Fleet Air Arm where he flew Seafires, Fireflies and Sea Furies. In 1953, he also served with the Royal Australian Navy in Korea on an exchange posting. During this time he flew Sea Furies from HMAS Sydney including ‘105’.

Starling Jean, Australia, WAAF, Specialist Photographic Interpreter, Flight Officer

WAAF Wednesday Jean Starling was born in Melbourne and moved to Canberra in 1928. She became Canberra’s first community librarian and established the library in the rear of Acton House. In 1938 she travelled to Britain and undertook a librarian’s course at London University College while working at Oxford City Library. Subsequently with the outbreak of war, she enlisted in the WAAF and trained as a specialist photographic interpreter.
