Heart, W, William “Bill”, United Kingdom, RAF, 582 Squadron, Air Gunner, Rear, Sergeant

Bill Heart was one of the casualties that war history often overlooks, he was found by those who first reached the crash site screaming out the names of his friends, oblivious to injuries of his own and franticly blowing his survival whistle as he stumbled through the burning fields where the remains on his Lancaster aircraft PB475 had fallen, sadly there would be no reply. To be separated from them was worse than death itself as like for most crews they had pledged that they would all go down together, fate had chosen otherwise and he was alone.

Robert John, England, Fleet Air Arm, Pilot, Rear Admiral,

John joined the Navy in 1938. John served throughout the war in various theatres. This included the Arctic Convoys twice, the Mediterranean, as well as supporting ground forces on D-Day. In 1945, he trained to fly and joined the Fleet Air Arm where he flew Seafires, Fireflies and Sea Furies. In 1953, he also served with the Royal Australian Navy in Korea on an exchange posting. During this time he flew Sea Furies from HMAS Sydney including ‘105’.
