Squadron Leader J M Checketts RNZAF, standing in front of a Supermarine Spitfire when commanding the Air-to-Air Combat Squadron of the Central Gunnery School at Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire. Checketts joined No. 485 Squadron RNZAF, shooting down his first enemy aircraft on 30 May 1943. He then joined No. 611 Squadron RAF, becoming a flight commander, and then, on returning to 485 Squadron in September as its commanding officer, was shot down over occupied Europe after his 11th victory.
